Google’s Big Picture Group has produced a Music Timeline.  This is an interactive visualisation of how the popularity of various music genres has varied over time.

The Music Timeline is based on statistics collected from Google Play Music.  While the timeline is based only on this source, and while it doesn’t include a major genre like classical music it porvides an interesting view of what kinds of music people list to.
