Sound is an integral part of our experience of the world around us. We tend to think of sight as our primary sense, but it only operates in the directions in which we are looking, and we turn it off when we close our eyes. However, our hearing is constantly stimulated by sounds from our environment, coming at us from all all directions. Therefore the sound of a place is a fundamental part of our awareness of it, and how we feel in it, though often only subconsciously so.
This article from the BBC touches on the ways that sound and our sound environment can affect us. As it points out, by considering sound and the acoustic aspects of the buildings we use we can make them happier, more comfortable spaces where we can be more effective.
