Here's a link to an article, titled "Speaker Technology", which discusses some of the technologies used by loudspeakers.  Loudspeakers have been in use in for over 150 years, and over that time a range of technologies have been developed and employed.  The article provides a historical perspective on the development of loudspeakers, and explains the principles on which the various types of loudspeakers are based.  It provides a useful overview, as well as a basic background which the more curious can use as a platform to investigate further.
