Leonard Cohen dies at 82

The hugely influential Canadian songwriter and singer, Leonard Cohen, died at the age of 82 on 2016-11-07.

A poet as well as a songwriter, Leonard Cohen is famous for such classic and widely covered songs as Suzanne and Halleluja.  Among the many honours he has received are:

  • Grammy for Album of the Year
  • Induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
  • Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame

Horace Silver dies at 85

Jazz pianist, composer and hard bop pioneer, Horace Silver, died in New York on 2014-06-18.

Silver got his start in the 1950s playing with Stan Getz.  He went on to play with many of the greats and to lead his own groups.  He also had a very successful recording career, principally with Blue Note.

Conductor Claudio Abbado dies at 80

Claudio Abbado Wikipedia pageItalian conductor, Claudio Abbado died in Bologna on 2014-01-20 at the age of 80 after a long illness.

Abbado, from Milan, made his debut at La Scalla in 1960.  Among the orchestras which he conducted are:

  • Vienna Philharmonic
  • Vienna State Opera
  • London Symphony Orchestra
  • Chicago Symphony Orchestra
  • Berlin Philharmonic

He also recorded for Deutche Gramaphon, Decca and Sony, and received numerous awards, including two Grammys.… Read the full post

Ray Dolby dies at 80

Ray Dolby, engineer and inventor of Dolby noise reduction, has died today of lukemia at the age of 80.

Dr. Dolby was the founder of Dolby Laboratories.  Over his career Dolby made many significant contribution to the fields of audio and video engineering, including video tape recording and the noise reduction and surround sound technologies that bear his name. … Read the full post
